    @reneritchie Twitter really has no shame imposing that kind of ill will on the people who brought them. Sad. But I’m a hypocrite since I keep using the service.

      @donmelton I keep using them to, because it's become a secondary comment system for my readership (and a primary one for sites like DF that have no comments). They just changed the rules halfway through the game, making for the worst of all worlds.

        @reneritchie @donmelton that is why we're on ADN :) Alas, most people stay where their friends are: Twitter.

          @reneritchie That’s interesting you mentioned using it as a comment system. When I was talking to the Twitter folks at Apple one time, I encouraged them to replace the shitty comment system on blogs with better integration to their site.

            @reneritchie For my own blog, it seems as if Twitter, ADN, Facebook and, of all things, Hacker News have become my commenting system. Just sort of spread out all over.

              @ralph @reneritchie Very true. I actually get a larger number of comments on my blog posts on Twitter, but the comments I do get on ADN seem to be higher in quality.

                @donmelton @reneritchie Could it just be down to the fact that 256 characters allow for a more detailed or nuanced response?

                  @ralph @reneritchie That’s certainly part of it, but I think it’s more about the type of people who hang out here. ADN is filled with much more technical and experienced folks — the classic early adopters.

                    @ralph @reneritchie … Plus, when you’re paying for the privilege I think you’re a little less caviler about how you use the service and what you say there.

                      @donmelton @reneritchie Exactly. I don't dare post food porn here :)

                        @ralph @reneritchie LOL! Yeah, on Twitter I know more about what some of my friends are eating that what I’ve consumed myself. :)

                          @donmelton BackType was an interesting startup that originally aimed to address this fragmentation. They were bought by Twitter. @reneritchie

                            @orian @reneritchie And I assume Twitter has done nothing with the technology? Or is that the basis of Twitter’s search feature.

                              @donmelton honestly I have no idea.

                                @orian @donmelton I have no inside knowledge but rather suspect the acquisition had a lot to do with this: http://engineering.twitter.com/2011/08/storm-is-coming-more-details-and-plans.html?m=1

                                  @phil @orian Interesting. So Storm was the distributed RPC mechanism behind BackType? It must have been really good since there are dozens of technologies out there like this.

                                    @donmelton @ralph @reneritchie check, and mate! The fact that Twitter has decreased the Tweet limit is disappointing itself. The brand mess on top... Forget it. I work with a few friends on a webOS Twitter client. I'm adding ADN so I can ditch Twitter.

                                      @reneritchie interesting post! Apparently there is an official, can-use-the-secret-vpn-api OpenVPN client for iOS. Source: http://louwrentius.com/blog/2013/01/setup-a-vpn-on-your-iphone-with-openvpn-and-linux/
