"Whether you like ICS or not, and again I like it a great deal, you will want to develop for that platform, and perhaps even first." – Eric Schmidt And here we are building Pocket Casts v4 for android before iOS.
    squozen
@mattro Is that because you think it'll be a more profitable market, or is it more limiting to develop for and will make design decisions easier cross-platform?
      mattro
@squozen in all honesty, I think designing might be easier this way. (not certain; first try) Android has so many limitations visually. I'm forced into being simple. When we build the iOS version, it'll be on top of a simple foundation.
        squozen
@mattro So my guess was right, because I was leaning towards the latter. Which version of Android are you targeting?
          mattro
@squozen both of your guesses were right in the case of Pocket Casts. We're targeting the latest while supporting as far back as we can.
            squozen
@mattro Obviously I'm not asking for figures, but has Android been more profitable for that app?
              reneritchie
@mattro Though, in fairness, Android is a far less competitive landscape for many kinds of apps.
                rustyshelf
@reneritchie @mattro I'd say it's actually way more competitive, but the competition is of much lower overall quality.
                  squozen
@mattro I suppose I should ask, does Android have basic podcast support built in or not?
                    mattro
@reneritchie agreed. This version is a big step up in the sense of overall quality. By putting in this level of effort, we hope to be -the- stand out app when it comes to podcasting on droid. Fingers crossed.
                      reneritchie
@rustyshelf @mattro Yeah, sorry, that’s what I meant. You’re doing iOS quality work on android. And that’s still very uncommon. People should be beating a path to your door with fists full of money.
                        reneritchie
@mattro I’ve looked at most of them. I didn’t see anything else in your class. And that was for the old version. You're bringing in nukes to a knife fight :-)
                          mattro
@squozen The droid version is a great app. Adding to this, we were fortunate to be featured internationally on the Play Store a while back. I don't think this is the case for every cross-platform app however.
                            mattro
@squozen basic support, yes. But the strength of our app is the podcast parsing is done on our server (in magic cloud land), so when you open the app you have a quick refresh, rather than a 2min refresh.
                              squozen
@mattro ah, to sit down over a drink and talk numbers.

@rustyshelf @mattro Also, podcasts.app took a lot of slack out of the market :(
                                  rustyshelf
@reneritchie @mattro I have to disagree there, our sales doubled a few days after podcasts.app came out. Looking at sales since then I think what's actually happened is that they've _increased_ the amount of people looking for podcast apps.
                                    mattro
@reneritchie I *like* podcasts.app. It does basic stuff. It's infuriating if you want anything more powerful than discover > play. Overall, I think it gets iOS users onboard the podcast train. This is a good thing. +@rustyshelf

@rustyshelf @mattro That’s great. The poll we ran had an absurd percentage of people sticking with the default.

@reneritchie @mattro I don't doubt that's what most people use. The difference is before podcasts.app most people used iTunes on the desktop. So Apple has done us a huge favour by moving all those people to iOS, and getting them used to that idea.

@mattro Sounds good. I look forward to it.

@mattro @reneritchie @rustyshelf and the tape deck IS adorable, even if it's ridiculous. #teamipodnano

@squozen I agree. I love the tape deck. It is ridiculous.

@rustyshelf Alright, I'm saving the rest for the podcast! This is great stuff.

I'd like to be able to click a 'Subscribe with Pocket Casts' button just like you would a like, follow or pin button.
