@duerig I also like your idea with the hex-mode. Could be a great user interface for a graphical editor. But not enough capacities this time...

@duerig the rail projects finished last week. One group implemented a compiler to LLVM: https://github.com/SWP-Ubau-SoSe2014-Haskell/SWPSoSe14 , the other group compiles to Java bytecode: https://github.com/ccebinger/SWPSoSe14/network

@duerig by the way, I'm using emacs & artist mode now. Thanks for the hint! Excellent training for my fine motor skills :-)

@duerig I added a comment to the esolang rail talk, regarding the list construction. Do you agree? The interpreter does not type check and accepts
$--[item1][item2]:--#
without crash. — photos.app.net/28928666/1

@duerig I'm glad you like it! I was trying to include as many types of crossings as possible. It really feels like a puzzle game to lay out the rails. Your idea about befunge & SpaceChem definitely makes sense.

@duerig Regarding our Rail Compiler Project -- in case we have any questions or suggestions for the rail spec, where can we add them? In the esolang wiki? http://esolangs.org/wiki/Talk:Rail

@duerig That's a great idea, a rail programming game. I had played spacechem in the past, but did not know that it has its origin in befunge. Do you know trainyard? http://trainyard.ca We might try a similar interface as a graphical editor for rail.

@duerig We will set up a github repo for the students to start with. Would it be alright, if we add the sources of your interpreter to the repo? Including credits and a link to the esolang wiki.

@duerig Hi Jon, we plan to implement a rail compiler at Free University of Berlin as a students project. Are there any resources besides the esolang wiki? So far I found a rail2C compiler written in Haskell at https://github.com/mtolly/rail
