@treestman Some of those choices are really hard to justify. The Gear is the best wearable, really?

@bglaettli I’m genuinely curious, does the Brazilian acquisition of the Gripen E change your view on the risk level of the aircraft?

@simon_w Thanks. Beautifully designed, rare to see such a nice airline app.

Quick question, any idea what the correct designation for the Xi’an Y-20 in Mandarin (Simplified Chinese notation) is? 西安 运 二零 or 西安 运 20?

@kalei In short, unlike the trend in the rest of the world the South African mining industry got smaller, not bigger, during the recent extended commodities boom. With labour issues and high input costs many mines are closing permanently.

@kalei The supertax proposal wasn't halted because of miners' complaints,it was created to placate the pro-nationalisation wing in the ANC and was subsumed into a general tax review due to report soon.Mining firms are under huge pressure in SA. cc @rabryst

@kalei Mining firms campaign far less against the ruling ANC than they could or arguably should. SA business is generally quite meek for historical reasons, usually only say the harshest things behind closed doors. @rabryst

@rabryst Right, that's something else we forget, what a contribution foreigners have made to SA. Most of SA's decent Italian food tradition stems from Italians who were POWs during WWII then returned afterwards.

@rabryst Same with the members of my family who've emigrated. Could never understand South Africans who mock or criticise those who go elsewhere.

@rabryst Good viewpoint to have, too many expats can't handle their adopted countries because they can't let go.
                            darrenolivier
@rabryst I can imagine. While there are fantastic parts about staying in SA, still, I saw a great quality of life in my brief stays in the northeastern US and southern England.
                              darrenolivier
@rabryst With gap between govt spending & govt income growing, pressure is on squeezing ever more tax out of few taxpayers. Becoming an expensive place to stay.
                                darrenolivier
@rabryst Exactly. They can't demand that you pay it, nor do they have any actual mechanism for you to do so now that I think about it. Ridiculous.
                                  darrenolivier
@rabryst Unfortunately if the SA tax authorities pursue it strongly enough the response will be for some to stop selling to South Africans.
                                    darrenolivier
@rabryst There's no way they can, at best they can try strong-arm the major retailers. It's a farce.
                                      darrenolivier
@jericho @jhwoodyatt @ceejbot Yes, if approved they'll be there primarily for the US team and any US VIPs. Other countries are meant to implement their own measures.
