i feel like the only person who doesn't understand or enjoy minecraft... what am i missing that everyone else seems to get?

@jazzychad What? You don't enjoy virtual simulations of jobs nobody wants to do in real iife? Must be something wrong with you!

@jazzychad I’m in that same camp, I don’t fully get it. My son can play in for hours and hours. I’ve assumed it was just that old generational thing. :/

@jazzychad are you playing it with friends?

@adiabatic no, haven't done multiplayer... does that change the dynamic significantly?

@jazzychad Sorta. One of the nice things about Minecraft is that you can build interesting things to show off to other people. Not playing multiplayer makes that more difficult.

@orian perhaps... it just feels like it takes so much time to create/build things in-game... to me it feels like i'm wasting time when i could be building/creating actually things in the real world (or learning new skills).

@orian maybe i should give it another shot... i've been feeling uncreative lately

@jazzychad @orian Think of it as a zen garden. When you rake the sand into a pleasing arrangement, are you wasting time or are you relaxing and letting your mind recover for the next challenge.

@jazzychad I’m not really advocating for it. I think @duerig’s description is apt though.

@duerig @orian the difference to me is that raking sand seems like much less work than crafting buildings and worlds and running from zombies... raking is a less brain-intensive task that can let my mind wander and recover

@jazzychad I play almost exclusively in peaceful and/or creative mode these days. Fighting zombies was kinda fun for the first little while. But really there are better games for that. Since mostly physics are optional, you can arrange blocks however.

@duerig @jazzychad I play in peaceful/creative as well, sort of how I play LEGO: a form of contemplation and creative outworking.
